Group Disability Income Insurance Plan FAQ
Who is this plan underwritten by?
This plan is underwritten by New York Life Insurance Company, under Group Policy No. G-12601-0, on Policy Form G-12601-0/GMR-FACE.
About New York Life Insurance Company
How much disability income insurance do I need?
This depends on a number of factors including: the disability benefits that you may receive from your employer, the amount of private disability income insurance you may have in force, plus the household income that will continue during your disability.
Who is eligible for this insurance?
ASCE members under age 70 in good standing are eligible to apply. Individuals must be actively employed, working a minimum of 30 hours a week, and earning a minimum of $20,000 a year. Spouses under age 60 are eligible to apply under the member's policy if the member is insured for at least $600 a month, and as long as the spouse is not insured as a member and is actively performing the normal activities of a person in good health of like age. In order to become insured, satisfactory evidence of insurability must be provided and the required premium must be paid.
A dependent who is also an ASCE member is eligible for either member or dependent coverage, but not both. If both member and spouse are covered as members, neither may insure the other as spouse and only one may insure any eligible children.
How long does the application process take? When will my coverage become effective?
For some plans, coverage becomes effective within a few days of receiving your application. For others, the process is longer because of required medical underwriting procedures. The "underwriting process" depends on many factors: the number of persons to be insured, their ages, the amount of coverage for which you apply, your medical history and that of your family members (if requesting dependent coverage), and the type of coverage requested.
How much disability income insurance can I request?
You have a choice of Monthly Benefit Options, from $150 to $7,500 in $150 increments. The option you choose, together with any other disability income insurance you may have, cannot exceed 60% of your gross monthly earned income (see brochure for definition). Members age 65 through 69 may not request a Monthly Benefit Option in excess of $3,750. If you have been self-employed for less than one year, your monthly benefit amount is limited to $1,050.
Do I have to take a medical exam, blood test, or other health analysis?
Whether or not you must undergo medical testing depends on the plan you are requesting, your age, the amount of coverage for which you apply, and your individual medical history.
When is the coverage effective?
You/your spouse will become insured on the date specified by New York Life Insurance Company provided the first premium contribution has been paid, satisfactory evidence of insurability has been submitted, and you are at FULL-TIME WORK. If you are not at FULL-TIME WORK on the approval date, you will not become insured until you are at FULL-TIME WORK, provided such date is within three months of the date insurance would have been effective and you are still eligible. For spouse coverage, member coverage must be in force. If a spouse proposed for insurance is not performing his/her normal activities as required, coverage will not become effective until he/she is performing such activities provided such date is within three months of the date insurance would have been effective and the spouse is still eligible. Payment of a premium contribution for insurance does not mean there is any coverage in force before the effective date as specified by New York Life Insurance Company. Note:There are instances where the company may be able to offer insurance (at the same premium) by eliminating coverage for a specific impairment or disease.
What constitutes a disability under this plan of insurance?
Benefits are payable when a covered sickness or injury leads to “TOTAL DISABILITY”. Please refer to the Brochure for the definition of Total Disability.
Can coverage continue if I am out of the country?
Call the Administrator for more details as coverage varies depending on the plan.
What if I have second thoughts after I apply?
When you become insured, you will be sent a Certificate of Insurance summarizing you benefits under the Plan. If you are not completely satisfied with the terms of your Certificate of Insurance, you may return it, without claim, within 30 days. Your coverage will be invalidated and you will be sent a full refund—no questions asked!
Who Administers the Program?
The ASCE Group Insurance Program is administered by Pearl Insurance. Pearl Insurance strives to provide ASCE members with the most relevant, competitively priced member benefit insurance packages for individuals and their families. Pearl Insurance has been providing associations like the ASCE with quality group coverage for nearly 55 years.
Who recommends/approves benefit changes or premium changes?
The insurance companies reserve the right to change rates. They report "plan experience" (or the number and size of claims made) twice a year and, if applicable, rate action recommendations. Using this information, the program Administrator works with ASCE to evaluate the recommendations and decide what, if any, action (i.e. a rate action, a change in benefits, or even a change in insurance companies) is appropriate to maintain each plan's financial stability and competitive status. ASCE ultimately approves the action, and insured members are advised of their decision prior to implementation.
